From November 1st to the 30th in 2023, we come together to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. This month-long tribute traces its roots back to 1916 when it all began with the commemoration of “American Indian Day” in New York State. It wasn’t until 1990, though, that the significance of this occasion was officially recognized on a national scale.
That year, President George H. W. Bush signed a joint resolution designating the entire month of November as the inaugural National Native American Heritage Month. It’s a time to remember, honor, and learn about the rich heritage of Native Americans and their invaluable contributions to our nation.

A Look Back at the History of National Native American Heritage Month
The journey of National Native American Heritage Month began as an endeavor to secure a day of appreciation and recognition for the unique contributions of the first Americans to the growth and establishment of the United States. This noble effort has evolved into an entire month dedicated to this purpose.
Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca Indian and the director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester, New York, was one of the earliest champions of American Indian Day. His advocacy even led the Boy Scouts of America to establish a day dedicated to Native Americans, which they observed for three days.
In 1915, during the annual Congress of the American Indian Association meeting, a formal plan was approved regarding American Indian Day. Rev. Sherman Coolidge, president of the American Indian Association, called upon the nation to commemorate this significant day.
The first official American Indian Day was declared in May 1916. This day evolved over the years, and in 1990, President George H.W. Bush approved a joint resolution, designating the entire month of November as National American Heritage Month.
Since 1994, declarations like Native American Heritage Month and National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month have continued to be issued, highlighting the importance of preserving and honoring Native American heritage.
